Hugo Kawamoto gained 3rd place in the kata and 2nd place in the kumite thus earning a place in the State Team. Hugo also put in a great performance and has been working hard all year in preparation for the championships. Cheyne McMahon made a return to competition after an absence of some years and gained 3rd place in the heavyweight kumite division. He was selected for the State Team on his performance. Cheyne made the decision to participate in the fighting section just 3 weeks from the competition and despite not being match fit and undergoing no training for the event was able to medal.

Chris Hannington put up a strong performance and was only just beaten by a point. He made it far enough to gain selection in the State Team. Karleen Hannington was leading in her kata match and playing off for 3rd place when her foot slipped slightly right at the end of her performance. She did however gain a 3rd place in her kumite division thus ensuring selection for the State Team.

 Oscar Kawamoto, Khoa Nguyen, Sean Hannington and Michelle Perry all tried their hardest but were unable to medal on the day. The AKA has only just returned to the Australian Karate Federation competitions and we acknowledge that it will take us some time to adjust to new rules. In saying that though we also acknowledge that because it is such a strong competition, its an excellent opportunity for the club members to be challenged into lifting their game to higher performance levels. We feel we are on the way back to the success we enjoyed many years ago.

The AKA in the 90′s was a very strong force in the Australian Karate Federation State and National Titles.  At one time we comprised a third of the State Junior Team and our members represented in National Teams with some taking home medals.  Interests in other aspects of karate and some political differences kept us out of the scene but we have now turned full circle and are enjoying competition and the effort that goes into being competitive at the higher levels.  

We have a team of nine members representing us this weekend.  Chief instructor, Cheyne McMahon is leading the team and making a comeback to competition after a long absence.  The other adult members are Chris Hannington, Karleen Hannington, Sean Hannington, Michelle Perry; junior members are Hugo Kawamoto, Oscar Kawamoto, Khoa Nguyen and Nicholas Berry.  

In lead up competitions the squad has achieved good results and we are quietly confident of bringing home a few medals and gaining some spots on the State Team for the National Titles in Sydney in August… results posted here next week.

However the Adult Novice class is 6.30pm this term rather than 6.15pm as out regular instructor, Ashley Lovi, has had a knee operation and his replacement can’t make the class until 6.30pm.

Nic Berry – Gold Medal 10 years kumite, and performed well in kata and was unlucky not to progress to the 3rd round.

Khoa Nguyen – Silver Medal 12/13 years Kata, Silver 13 years kumite – Great work!

Oscar Kawamata – Was very unlucky not to progress to the 2nd round of kata as drew the competitor who ended up winning the division.

Hugo Kawamata – Silver Medal 14/15 years Kata, Silver 15 years kumite – Excellent effort.

Karleen Hannington – Silver in women’s over 60kg kumite – Did very well in kata, but drew the current Australian champion in the 3rd round! Best performance of the day.

Cheyne McMahon – Lost first round in men’s kata, but performance was good.

Kim Batemean – Unfortunately pulled out of women’s kata due to illness. Worked on the tables on Sunday helping out officials. THanks Kim!

Paul Bateman – 3rd Men’s over 80kg kumite – excellent work Paul.

Chris Hannington – Lost first round in men’s 73 – 80kg kumite but put up a good showing and tried hard.

Sean Hannington – Also lost first round in men’s 73 – 80kg kumite but was very unlucky not to progress.

We are also in the process of rejoining the Australian Karate Federation as National and State members.  The AKA has its own competition squad and its time we got serious about competing for the opportunity for our students to represent both their State and Country.

Our instructors are all being processed for Blue Cards, and have gained or are in the process of acquiring First Aid.CPR accreditation and as members of the AKF will regain Coaching and Refereeing accreditation.  Its all happening!

Hello Bob & Cheyne,

I’m sending to you some photos we took at the 2011 NSW Open Karate Championship. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your help in training Khoa over the last two years and for your support at the competitions.

Bob and Cheyne, you are not only great martial artists; to us you are devoted and excellent teachers, experienced to coach kids and adults alike. You’re also great role models in martial art performance and have a great sporting spirit. Above all, you have provided a friendly, nurturing and enjoyable learning environment.

Thanks to this, Khoa – along with other students – has been able to earn, to improve and to achieve a great deal after two years of training.

After receiving the Gold Medal, one parent came and asked Khoa what club he has been training with. In a clear voice and I am sure also with great pride and gratitude, Khoa replied that he was from the AKA Coorparoo Dojo in Brisbane Queensland.
