Hugo Kawamata wins Gold in the male 16/17 years division. Hugo battled through 4 rounds of kata to win the event. He is now automatically selected in the the QLD Karate Team to contest the National Titles in Hobart in August.

Khoa Nguyen claimed Bronze in the 14/15 years male kata. He was unlucky to draw the eventual winner in the first round. Khoa put in a great performance and will most likely be selected into the Qld Karate Team as well.

Evie Lukin in her first QLD Karate Championship won her first kata match but was bested in the playoff for 3rd. She put in a sterling performance and now has experience to draw on.

Kiarra Sawynok was unlucky to lose her 2nd round match, and despite winning Gold and Bronze respectively in the National Schools Karate Championship and the Australian Open Titles did not have an opportunity to playoff for a medal.

Tomorrow will see the sparring commence and Grace Kruger, William St. Baker and Cheyne McMahon will also enter the fray. We are hoping for good results tomorrow as well.

The Australian Karate Academy together with the Wavell Heights Karate Club (Seikukan) and the Seidokan Karate Club have spearheaded a new initiative to enable our young students to gain match practice with others from different clubs. There are no medals or trophies, just the opportunity to have at lease 3 kata matches and 5 kumite matches in a Rensei (practice competition).

Usually when a child enters individual competition, they can take a lot of time trying to just get through the first round of competition. In the BKL, we give the children many matches in order that they gain much more experience in a shorter timeframe. So far we have had 12 different Clubs involved in a series of three trials. We will now be opening it up to all traditional Karate Clubs involved in the World Karate Federation style of competition.

Our aim is to develop future champions who can represent Queensland in National and International competitions especially in the Olypics should karate get the nod in 2020. At the AKA, we have embraced the challenge of setting this goal and are working hard in ensuring our students have a big chance in representing Australia in World Championships and hopefully Olympic Karate!

Saturday afternoon, the 9th of March, 8 juniors from the Coorparoo dojo participated in both kata and kumite matches at Wavell Heights in the Seikukan dojo. Chris McCarthy, Ella Williams, Olivia Bielen, Max Dang, Calvin Tan, William St. Baker, Grace Kruger and Khoa Nguyen all represented their dojo well by doing their best. Their are no place getters or medals; the aim is to give the juniors match experience, and plenty of them.

The AKA supplied two judges, Sensei Peter Bateman and Sensei Kim Bateman, Gayleen McMahon, Stefan and Kiarra Sawyrok, Stephen St. Baker and Erika McCarthy helped out with ring marshalling and table officiating.
Its pleasing to see so many parents give up time on the weekend to help the children progress in karate.
